Jesus' Son, a short story collection from Denis Johnson, is tiny. A child-friendly, lyrically written book that weaves 44 Bible stories into a common tapestry that clearly shows God's plan for mankind. She dresses up as Aunt Lydia (as in Lydia from Thyratira, from the book of Acts) in a modest purple robe (like the kind Lydia might have sold) inside her Christian book store, The Bible Barn. Though it's a quarter of the thickness of his sprawling Vietnam novel Tree of Smoke, it still packs just as much punch. The underlying difference is that one is a prophet – a great one at that; and the other, the Son of God! Denis Johnson's Jesus' Son: Stories (1992), for me, is as close to being high on dope that one can become from merely ingesting words and sentences and paragraphs through one's eyes and, if read aloud, ears. I have had Johnson's story collection (connected story collection, that is) Jesus' Son (1992) on my shelf for a long time. Jesus could directly command the dead man to get up. For whatever reason, despite others reading it and recommending it highly, I avoided it. Stories Jesus Told: The Persistent Widow Stories Jesus Told: The Wise and Foolish Builders. As I have mentioned before we are a homeschool family but as part of our children's education we do have them is different classes to enhance their learning.
